"Dixie's going Latin," Hispanic Magazine recently proclaimed, naming Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill the 10th best metropolitan area in the nation for Latinos to call home. According to the 2000 Census, the total population of Hispanics in Durham and Wake counties is 51,024, making up 5.9 percent of the total population. A group of investors headed by Sam Verdeja, the publisher of Hispanic Magazine, has bought out the Coral Gables-based Hispanic Publishing Corp., which owns Hispanic Magazine, Hispanic Trends and the Web site HispanicOnline.com.Verdeja, who took over as publisher in 1999, made the announcement Monday.
